Kaabong Deputy RDC Lauds UPDF for Restoring Peace to Karamoja Sub-Region

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) of Kaabong, Fedelisi Loluk Logwee, has applauded the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for playing a pivotal role in restoring peace and security across the Karamoja sub-region, particularly in Kaabong district.

During a press briefing held at the Kaabong district headquarters on September 20, 2024, Logwee expressed his satisfaction with the current state of peace prevailing in the area.

“We’re enjoying peace in all corners of Kaabong district and the Karamoja sub-region at large. I attribute this achievement to the NRM government in conjunction with UPDF and other security agencies,” Logwee said.

He highlighted the Ugandan government’s strategic initiative of disarming the Karamojong communities, which has significantly contributed to regional stability.

“This peace has enabled locals to engage in productive activities, particularly agriculture, thereby addressing food insecurity in the area,” Logwee noted.

Lt Col Gaston Mugarura, the Commanding Officer of the 45 Infantry Battalion in Kaabong, shared insights about the success of operation ‘Usalama Kwa Wote,’ initiated in 2021. He said that the operation has resulted in the recovery of numerous firearms and ammunition, facilitated by community engagement and coordinated search operations.

“The UPDF’s commitment to civilian cooperation, respecting and collaborating with the wanainchi, is why we have managed to be successful in our operations,” he said.

Meri Jino, the Local Council V Chairman, expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his continuous support of the region.

He encouraged the local community to peacefully surrender their firearms and focus on transformative initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga. Jino further addressed misconceptions about insecurity in Karamoja and invited people to visit the region.

“The place is very peaceful, and I urge all people to come and explore the beauty of Karamoja,” Jino said.

The event was well-attended, with representatives from various peace initiative groups and local leaders joining the RDC in celebrating the strides made towards lasting peace in the region.
