In the light of the aftermath of the Covid 19 pandemic in Uganda, members of the IPOD have proposed that in the country holds ‘Scientific’ elections next year. The Scientific elections would replace the common procedures that we know today on how to elect our leaders.
The suggestions are so far scanty and no formal proposals have been forwarded as yet. A group of EALA MPs had earlier requested that the general elections be pushed forward by two years to enable the country to recover from the pandemic.
Members of opposition have blamed President Yoweri Museveni for positioning himself as the only fit candidate ahead of the 2021 general Elections. The President has been praised by many for his outstanding leadership amidst the pandemic and praised his conduct and measures in the light Covid 19.
The other potential candidates can however not blame Museveni for grabbing the bull by the horns. He has been brave and turned a potentially ugly situation around.
What they should be asking now is how they as Opposition have used the circumstances to demonstrate their leadership potential. Many of the leaders engaged in greed when they distributed 10 billion shillings among themselves in PARLIAMENT.
For that matter therefore, this group should be afraid of the coming Elections. It poses a potential bloody nose for the politicians who have failed to offer themselves to the country when it has needed them the most.
Members of Parliament have been on the receiving end of insults from the population over the manner of their conduct during this pandemic. MPs historically face a high turnover during elections with the number rising to over 60% during the last elections.
Scientific elections would enable this group navigate a tough electorate and they would rather find ways of avoiding the traditional ballot at whatever cost.
