The government has engaged the Uganda National Teachers Union-UNION in a negotiation drive in a bid to end the current strike by the arts’ teachers over pay rise.
On Monday, while addressing the press at the Media Centre in Kampala, the Public service Minister, Wilson Muruli Mukasa maintained government commitment to enhance payments.
He says government is negotiating with teachers through UNATU to have the stalemate halted so as to resume work.
Minister noted that pay enhancement is critical for all civil servants and government is committed to ensure that this is effected in phases for all.
According to Minister Muruli Mukasa, government has continued to engage with UNATU to resolve the current standoff with the teachers.
His address stemmed from the expiry of ultimatum that was given by government until June 25th for teachers to halt strike and resume work. It’s now three weeks when many government aided learning institutions have remained closed due to teachers strike.
In 2018/2019, the Government rolled out the first enhancement and U8 & U7 were covered across the service.
This included the Teachers, Security and Health Workers and a huge percentage of Local Government leaders were also covered under this phase.
But according to Minister, the planned phased pay enhancement was affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic in 2020.
In the coming financial year, government has planned and budgeted to effect pay rise for science teachers and health workers among others.
