On October 10, 2024, the government has embarked on a nationwide exercise aimed at surveying and titling land owned by schools, including untitled land associated with churches (both Anglican and Catholic) and the Muslim community.

This program is designed to safeguard school land from potential land grabs, ensuring legal protection and clarity regarding ownership rights.

The primary goal is to prevent unauthorized claims on school properties, which can jeopardize educational institutions and their operations.

Dr. Denis Mugimba, the Education Ministry Spokesperson, said that all certificates of land titles for government schools will be kept by the Bank of Uganda for safe custody.

However, this initiative not only aims to secure land rights but also reflects a broader commitment to uphold educational infrastructure within the community.

“All certificates of titles for government schools will be kept in the Bank of Uganda for good safety. Under this, foundation bodies will be prohibited from using school land for activities unrelated to education, addressing concerns over commercial and other non-educational developments on these lands,” Mugimba said.

This measure aims to prevent any unauthorized alterations or misuse of the land titles for these schools.

Since 2013, the Ministry of Education and Sports has been working to ensure that public and government-aided schools obtain their certificates of title to secure their long-term existence.
