The Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, has provided three tractors, 60,000 coffee seedlings, 20,000 avocado seedlings, and 5,000 kilograms of soya seeds to farmers in the Greater Luwero sub-region.
This was during the launch of the Greater Luwero Transformation Programme on Friday, October 18, 2024, at Nakaseke District headquarters by NRM Deputy Secretary General, Namayanja Rose Nsereko.
The initiative aims to improve the livelihoods of people through agro-industrialization, supporting cottage industries, and scaling up large-scale sectors to boost the region’s economic development.
According to Namayanja, the livestock sector is also being supported with 70,000 doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine, 10,000 doses for Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), and 10,000 doses for Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) to improve livestock health and productivity.
Namayanja also highlighted that the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) has committed to setting up six centers to support coffee production, including mother gardens, nursery beds, and demonstration farms to equip farmers with modern techniques that will drive efficiency and higher yields.
Namayanja enlightened that the program aims to increase household incomes in the districts of Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola targeting specific areas that need support.
“We have taken a bold step by introducing this affirmative action program to elevate the economic status of the Greater Luwero sub-region,” she said.
However, Namayanja pointed out that the NRM is spearheading this initiative in partnership with various government ministries, NGOs, the private sector, and other key stakeholders.
Namayanja urged farmers and district leaders to make best use of the farming equipment provided.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, Joel Joe Ocan praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step in strengthening rural farming communities.
“The tractors and equipment provided represent an opportunity to increase production, diversify crops, and implement modern farming techniques that will drive efficiency and higher yields,” he said.
Bwabye Ntulume, the Luweero Resident District Commissioner (RDC), expressed gratitude to Namayanja for the initiative, which is customized to meet the specific needs of the three districts in the sub-region.
He pledged that local leaders would continue to work together to make ensure services reach the people.
This initiative is aligned with NRM’s socio-economic transformation agenda
