Gabon, Uganda Deepen Bilateral Ties during President Nguema’s Visit

Uganda and Gabon have made significant strides in enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations during a courtesy visit by His Excellency Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the Transitional President of Gabon.

President Nguema who is currently on an official visit to Uganda at the invitation of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, arrived in the country on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

Accompanied by a delegation of ministers and advisors, President Nguema engaged in fruitful discussions with President Museveni, focusing on Gabon’s transition timetable and an upcoming referendum.

In a joint press statement of August 1, 2024, by both parties, President Museveni commended Gabon’s progress towards constitutional democracy, emphasizing the importance of political stability in the region.

“The leaders expressed a mutual desire to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors, aiming for shared benefits that could strengthen both economies,’ the press statement read in part.

The statement further highlighted that agricultural development was key for their discussion.

According to the statement, President Nguema expressed Gabon’s intention to reduce its dependence on food imports.

“He sought insights from Uganda’s successful agricultural practices, which have positioned the country as a regional leader in food production,” the statement read.

In addition to bilateral matters, the two presidents exchanged views on pressing regional, continental, and international issues, reaffirming their commitment to collaboration in addressing these challenges.

President Nguema expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the warm welcome and extended an invitation to him to visit Gabon in the future, signaling a strong commitment to ongoing dialogue and cooperation.

The visit highlighted the strengthening of ties between Gabon and Uganda, paving the way for future collaboration in various sectors that benefit both nations.
