The former Executive Secretary of Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Mathew Bukenya is dead.
UNEB Spokesperson Jennifer Kalule confirmed the development on July 22, 2024, during a local radio interview that the former Secretary had passed on Sunday night.
“It’s true, he passed on,” Kalule stated.
Kalule further described the deceased as a dedicated servant whose legacy remains in Uganda’s educational history.
Bukenya served as the head of UNEB from April 1995 to April 2016 and will be remembered for his dedication, exemplary service, and significant strides in overcoming challenges during his tenure.
Bukenya was formally appointed on January 6, 2003, after working acting capacity, and went on to run the national examinations board until 2016.
His remarkable career at UNEB began in 1995, making him the longest-serving Secretary in the board’s history under his leadership, UNEB faced significant challenges, including examination malpractices, but he and his team worked tirelessly to combat these issues and uphold the integrity of the examination process.
Bukenya retired from UNEB on March 31, 2016, after being recalled out of retirement to head the organization. He had previously worked there as an accountant, replacing David Livingstone Ongom, who was sacked by the government.
