Former Attorney General Kiddu Makubuya has passed on at the age of 75 from Nakasero Hospital Kampala, where he had been admitted sometimes.

Makubuya, who served in government holding various appointments, including being the Minister of Education and Sports and Minister for General Duties, died on Monday, August 19, 2024.

The deceased was also a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission, which was instrumental in drafting the 1995 Constitution of Uganda.

After joining politics in the late 1980s, Makubuya was elected Member of Parliament for Katikamu South Constituency in 1996; he later resigned from Cabinet in February 2012.

He served as the Attorney General from 2005 to 2011, during one of the most trying moments for Uganda’s politics with the emergence of multiparty politics.

Born on July 30, 1949, Prof. Makubuya had a distinguished career in academia, serving as a lecturer and dean at Makerere University’s Law School.

He had graduated with a First Class Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere in 1974 before holding a Master of Laws degree and a Doctor of Juridical Science, both from Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, US, in 1976 and 1979, respectively.

In 1998, he was appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs (International Cooperation), a portfolio he held until April 5, 1999, when he was appointed Minister of Education and Sports.

Makubuya served as Uganda’s Justice Minister and Attorney General from January 14, 2005, until May 27, 2011, when he assumed the position of Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister.

He resigned from the cabinet on February 16, 2012, after allegations of misappropriation of government funds.
