Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted and destroyed several properties at Kyamakanda Secondary School on Saturday morning.

Musa Tibakirana, the Rukungiri District Police Commander, said they have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire that burned down a dormitory that was housing some 50 students.

He adds that police reached the scene after fire had already burned several properties, saying no deaths were recorded from the incident.

“Our firefighting team responded immediately and managed to put out the fire with the support of students,” DPC Musa said.

According to DPC, whereas there was no fatality recorded during the incident, students who had fainted were rushed for treatment from the nearby medical facility.

“There were no deaths recorded except that 17 students fainted because of fear, but they were admitted to Nyashibare hospital and Rugalama Health Center IV, and they have since stabilised,” he said.

According to the police, the property lost includes mattresses, books, clothing, documents, and beds.
