πΊπ¬ MPs fault poorΒ lighting at Entebbe Express Highway for road accidents
πMPs on the Committee of Physical Infrastructure have blamed poor lighting as the cause of accidents on Entebbe Express Highway.
βWe have tasked the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to come up with strategic and punitive measures to address the challenges of vandalism on the expressway which among others includes resorting to alternative construction materials that are not attractive to vandalsβ.
While in the meeting with MPs, the Minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala also proposed to resort to materials such as concrete materials to avoid vandals.

πAn elephant suspected to have come from Murchison National Park has killed one and injured two others in Buliisa District.
βWe received reports that a stray elephant caused the death of a 62-year-old man and injured two other farmers,” said Hakiza Julius, Police Spokesper for Albertine region.

πThe Government of South Africa will host Uganda-South Africa Trade, Tourism, and Investment expo scheduled to take place on on February 27Β to March 1, 2023. This will enhance both countries’ work relations towards exploring their economic opportunities, said an official from Uganda Investment Authority. President Yoweri Museveni and his South African counterpart President Cyril Ramaphosa are expected to attend the expo. President Museveni urged the business community to embrace the summit as a way of expanding the market.

π KENYA: Uhuru Appointed to head AU mission in Nigeria pollsΒ
πThe African Union has appointed former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to lead its observation mission in the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria come February 25, 2023. The observer mission includes representatives from the AU member statesβ election bodies, civil society, independent experts and AU organs while in Nigeria they are to assess the electoral process and offer recommendations for improvement of the future elections.

πPresident William Ruto has declared six vacancies at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), paving way for the recruitment of new commissioners that isΒ to kick off soon. In a Gazette Notice dated February 14, 2023, the President declared six out of seven positions open, pending the hearing and determination of a case against suspended Commissioner Irene Masit. Three of the positions fell vacant following the retirement of former Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye whose six-year non-renewable term came to an end last month and the other three slots were left vacant following the resignation of three other Commissioners last year.

πA Kenyan Senator was ejected from Parliament after attending a session while wearing a white suit stained red in an apparent menstrual activism campaign. Senators disrupted Tuesdayβs afternoon session to draw the Speakerβs attention to Ms Orwobaβs βinappropriate dress codeβ. But the senator protested saying, βI am shocked that someone can stand here and say that the House has been disgraced because a woman has had her periods.β Speaker Amason Kingi ordered the Senator to go change her clothes before she could be readmitted to the chambers.
βHaving periods is never a crime, Senator Gloria, I sympathise with you that you are going through the natural act of menstruation, you have stained your wonderful suit, Iβm asking you to leave so that you go change and come back with clothes that are not stained,β the Speaker said.
π ETHIOPIA: Hundreds of ‘Orthodox’ terrorism suspects arrested
πHundreds of followers of the main Christian Orthodox Church in Ethiopia have been arrested in recent days following tensions with the authorities, lawyers representing the religious institution have said. The head of the Churchβs legal team, Ayalew Bitanie, said the number of those detained was more than 200. Most of the detainees were held in the capital, Addis Ababa, and districts near the city but some of them have been taken to an army camp more than 200 km east of Addis, Mr Ayalew said. Police said they were investigating them for possible terrorism-related crimes and attempts to dismantle the constitutional order.

πPresident Muhammadu Buhari has asked his United Arab Emirates (UAE) counterpart, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to lift a visa ban his nation imposed on Nigerians.
“Nigeria and the UAE have enjoyed excellent and beneficial relations for many years, including at the highest political levels. We can and must continue to iron out whatever issues arise between usβ, Mr Buhari Said. President Buhari assured the UAE that judicial sanctions will be imposed on Nigerians found to have committed criminal acts in the UAE.
π GHANA: Footballer Christian Atsu still not located after Turkey earthquake
πFootballer Christian Atsu is still missing after the Turkey earthquake on 6 February, his agent has said. Ghana international Atsu has not been seen since the earthquake that caused the collapse of the apartment in the city of Hatay in which he was staying. Last week, Atsuβs partner Claire Rupio called for equipment to be sent to the collapsed building where he was living.
“IΒ am at the quake site in Hatay with Christianβs family. The scenes are unimaginable and our hearts are broken for all the people affected,β she Said.
π UN urges Sahel States to fight arms trafficking
πThe United Nations says countries in the Sahel must do more to combat the trafficking of arms into the region. The UN says the majority of the weapons have been diverted from national armed forces in other African countries, notably Libya, Sierra Leone and Liberia. It blamed both corruption and a low state presence for the inflow.
