Authorities of Katabi Entebbe in Wakiso district have, on August 13, 2024, finally agreed to temporarily allow garbage from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to be disposed of at the Nkumba Bukolwa dumpsite in Katabi.
This follows the recent garbage dump landfill disaster that occurred in Kiteezi Kawempe Division, Central Uganda, that led to the deaths of over 21 people. Authorities decided to look for other sites where the garbage could be disposed of, with sites such as Dundu in Mukono being dimmed virgin land and thus unusable, as stated by the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago at a stakeholder meeting on August 12, 2024.
Previously, Entebbe municipality authorities had blocked trucks from KCCA from dumping garbage at the Nkumba Bukolwa dumpsite in Katabi, citing a lack of enough space. However, in turn of events, the authorities of Katabi Entebbe, including the mayor of Katabi Town Council, Kalema Basamula, while addressing the media in Entebbe, accepted to allow garbage from Kampala city to be dumped at the said dumping site under strict conditions.
‘’They will not exceed two months using the site; they are to expand the roads leading to the site because the cars they are using are wide and our roads are only able to sustain the small vehicles we have been using. The trucks transporting the garbage should always move at reduced speeds,’’ Mayor Kalema said.
He further noted that both authorities agreed to the terms and that all conditions will be fulfilled in a period not exceeding this week.
‘’If they don’t adhere to the conditions set to repair the road, we will again block access to the site,’’ Kalema stated.
Mayor Kalema further cited that KCCA should bring vehicles to clear the rubbish that has been previously dumped at the entrance to the site by their dumpsite vehicles in the previous days to give easy access to vehicles to enter and exit the site.
