Kampala – Authorities are set to amend the charge sheet against Dr. Kizza Besigye, adding Dr. Joel Mirembe, the Secretary to the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), as the fourth suspect in the ongoing treachery case.
Sources indicate that Dr. Mirembe is accused of collaborating with Dr. Besigye, Abeid Lutaale Kamulegeya, and Captain Denis Ola in an alleged plot to assassinate President Yoweri Museveni by shooting down his helicopter using a drone.
“Dr. Mirembe is among those working closely with Besigye to destabilize the country and end President Museveni’s life. He has been operating behind the scenes, mobilizing members of the UMA and doctors to support Besigye by going on strike,” a security source revealed.
The source further disclosed that Dr. Mirembe, upon learning of his impending arrest, has chosen to preemptively issue a press release together with Dr Ekwaro Obuku, alleging that Dr Kizza Besigye’s life is in danger due to lack of medical attention and that UMA condemns his continued detention.
The press release reportedly set to be shared by Dr. Ekwaro Obuku, the former UMA president, claims Dr Joel Mirembe is being targeted for advocating for Dr. Besigye’s health.
This development marks a significant turn in the ongoing case, as authorities intensify investigations into the alleged conspiracy. Dr. Besigye and his co-accused have yet to respond to the latest charges.
However, his plans were quickly discovered, prompting the UMA to issue a statement denouncing his planned move.
Dr. Andrew Mark Muyanga, the UMA Communication Officer, has issued a statement distancing the association from Dr. Mirembe’s claim, adding that the association is not a political organization.
“Dr. Mark Muyanga, the Communication Officer of UMA distancing themselves from Dr. Mirembe’s intended press release.”
“It has come to our attention that some people with their own self-interests are spreading falsehoods using UMA and claiming we are calling members to riot against Dr. Kizza Besigye’s situation whereas not,” Muyanga said.
