The opposition Democratic Party (DP) has expressed concern about how local councilors of the Kampala City Council Authority, KCCA, and the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, have abandoned cardinal roles and resorted to fighting.
Ismail Kiirya, the DP spokesperson, said on Tuesday, September 24th, 2024, that KCCA councilors and Lukwago should focus on service deliveries, including creating a reliable garbage management system to ensure a clean City.
While addressing the weekly press briefing at party offices, Kiirya said that KCCA leadership should focus on garbage management before it results in a cholera disaster.
“We want to remind you that the fights that you are engaged in are not necessary when we have garbage everywhere within the city,” Kiirya said.
Kiirya expressed fear of a looming cholera outbreak if the garbage issue in Kampala is not resolved.
According to him, under Lukwago’s full-time watch, garbage is now ruling major streets in Kampala, as some dwellers have now resorted to throwing it in trenches and roads at night.
DP’s statement stemmed from the recent physical fight at the KCCA hall between the councilors of NUP and FDC.
The Kiteezi landfill collapse, which saw more than 30 people killed, led to the closure of the Kiteezi landfill, leaving many KCCA divisions stuck with rubbish.
