Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has granted bail to 10 protestors of the March to Parliament demonstration. The group was part of the suspects arrested last Tuesday.
Among those who were granted bail included the former Makerere University Guild President Maseruka Robert, who was released on UGX 100,000 cash bail and UGX 500,000 non-cash for the sureties.
The other nine have been released on UGX 100,000 cash bail and UGX 300,000 non-cash for the sureties.
They were represented by a team of lawyers led by Bernard Oundo, President of the Uganda Law Society, who noted that about 19 protestors were arraigned to court.
Lawyer Oundo identified the protestors as Kato Jeremiah, Kanunu Ashiraf, Onyango David Anderson, Kiyaga Eddy, Ssagala Abdul Rahman Kabanda, Abdul Majid, Mutibwa Innocent, Muwonge Vian, and Abdul Bast Najib.
They are facing charges of causing a common nuisance and will return to court on August 29th for the hearing.
Police said between July 22 and July 25, 2024, demonstrators attempted to march to Parliament in Kampala, leading to the arrest of several suspects.
On July 23, 2024, a total of 75 suspects were apprehended; 74 were subsequently taken to court, while one remained in police custody.
Police said over 100 individuals have been arrested since the march to Parliament demonstration broke out.
Relatedly, 36 FDC supporters who were allegedly arrested in Kenya and subsequently deported to Uganda were arraigned before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court this morning on charges of terrorism.
