Hundreds of Ugandans have asked the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, MP Joel Ssenyonyi, to overtake Shs1.7 billion in bribery.

Trouble for LOP Ssenyonyi escalated following a shocking revelation by journalist Dean Lubowa Saava.

Journalist Lubowa revealed that LOP Ssenyonyi received a bribe worth 1.7 billion to hide a report that exposed a government entity while he was Chairperson of the Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE).

In response to Saava’s revelation, Ssenyonyi, through PACE Advocates, filed a civil suit for defamation against Lubowa.

His decision has since angered Ugandans and sparked a social media campaign to demand his resignation.

This has sparked outrage, with citizens demanding that Ssenyonyi refund taxpayers’ money and resign from the LOP post.

Under the famous hashtag #SsenyonyiMustResign, angry Ugandans on social media want the LoP to resign immediately or face criminal prosecution.

Wilberforce Kyambandde, a former Nakawa West MP contestant under the Forum for Democratic Change, remarked that “it is unfortunate that the people whom we thought were in opposition fighting for the common person are now exploiting the same people they ought to help; hence, it is upon the general public to raise against such politicians.

Nsubuga Derrick on his X account says, “Ssenyonyi, you started your journey at UBC, getting 300k, then NTV, getting 1.5m. You are renting a double room before joining parliament, where you have been for 3 years. How did you build an apartment in Ntinda worth billions? A house in Kira worth a billion, a house in Kira worth a billion, Ssenyonyi.”
“Pocketing 1.7 billion shillings means Ssenyonyi ate a full, well-structured seed secondary school with desks, 5 blocks, 4 toilets, and 2 kitchens, and remember, Ssenyonyi was born in Nakasongola district with no seed school,” said Akello Jane Mary on her X handle.
