Ssentamu Churchill James, the Guild President of Makerere University, has broken his silence and addressed the concerns raised by the National Unity Platform (NUP) Party leaders following his meeting with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In a media briefing held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Makerere University, Churchill made it clear that his leadership as Guild President would not be dictated by party politics, especially those focused on the opposition struggle to remove President Museveni from power.
Instead, he emphasized his dedication to working with the government to fulfill the promises he made to the students during his election campaign.
The meeting between Churchill and President Museveni had sparked a significant backlash within the NUP, leading to questions about his loyalty to the party’s principles.
Churchill, however, was quick to explain that his decision to meet with the president had no political undertones.
“My primary responsibility is to the students of Makerere University, and I am committed to ensuring their welfare and securing the future they deserve,” Churchill stated.
“This has always been my focus, and I will not let political affiliations overshadow my role as Guild President.”
Churchill went on to address the criticism of his father, Fred Ssentamu, for not intervening in his decision to meet with the president.
He explained that while he respected his father’s political views, he was ultimately an independent leader.
“I am an independent leader,” While I respect my father’s views and the political stance of the NUP, I am responsible for my own decisions, particularly those relating to my leadership at Makerere University.” Churchill affirmed.
In his statement, Churchill reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the needs of the students and the broader university community over partisan politics.
He highlighted that his leadership would be driven by tangible results rather than political agendas.
“I was elected to serve all students, regardless of their political affiliation. My duty is to deliver on the promises I made during my campaign,” Churchill added.
“I am not here to play political games. I am here to focus on the future and education of the students at Makerere University.”
Additionally, Churchill reiterated that his leadership would focus on bringing positive change to Makerere University, with an emphasis on student welfare.
“My role is to ensure that the students of Makerere receive the best opportunities and education. That is my top priority, and I will continue to serve them to the best of my ability,” he said.
