The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has welcomed the new Italian Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mauro Massoni, and the two affirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
In a statement by the UPDF Deputy Defence Public Information Officer (DDPIO), Col Deo Akiiki, the meeting between the two leaders held on June 17, 2024, at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters in Entebbe centered on matters of mutual interest between Uganda and Italy, with both acknowledging the long-standing historical ties between the two nations.
According to the statement, Uganda and Italy have maintained diplomatic relations for years, but the relationship was strengthened in 2020 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation.
“This agreement has paved the way for enhanced cooperation and collaboration between the two countries in the realm of security and defence,” the statement read in part.
The statement further highlighted that the meeting underscored the significance of the Uganda-Italy relationship and the shared desire to deepen the ties between the two nations.
“As the new ambassador, Massoni’s appointment marks a new chapter in the long-standing diplomatic relationship, and the discussions held today point towards a future of continued cooperation and mutual understanding,” the statement added.
Ambassador Massoni succeeded Ambassador Massimiliano Mazzanti, whose term in Uganda concluded last year.
