The Masaka Chief Magistrates Court has remanded Robert Welishe, the headteacher of Butale Church of Uganda Primary School, on charges of providing false information.
This comes after the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), in conjunction with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), arraigned Welishe in court.
In the statement released by SHACU on December 18, 2024, between February and May 2024, the accused, being a headteacher of Butale C.O.U. Primary School, submitted wrong information of the pupil enrollment records to the Masaka City Education Officer.
“The accused informed the Masaka City Education Officer that 423 UPE students had been enrolled, which was not true, an act he knew would cause financial loss to the government,” the statement reads in part.
Additionally, the statement stated that the accused was further remanded to Luzira prison until December 23, 2024.
Referring to the law, if convicted under Section 11(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act, the accused individuals could face a prison sentence of up to seven years and a fine not exceeding UGX 5.3 million.
