Last weeks apprehension of eight Bank of Uganda officials and other Ministry of Finance staff has raised dust over an issue that has left the Government with a sore eye.

Lack of a uniform public relations approach to the issue has also exposed another glaring weakness of cooperation between various departments and agencies.

The timing of the scandal is also questionable, for long many opposition analysts have accused the government of printing currency whenever a new election cycle is around the corner, an accusation that has always been vehemently (with cause) denied by the authority.

Could this scandal or miscommunication be an attempt at damaging the reputation and Legitimacy of the sitting government?

It is therefore prudent that as this story continues to unfold, the government adopts a unified communications approach to help dispel rumours that have a wider fiscal implication especially in the confidence of our currency in the international money market.

And if there is any truth in the allegations made by the Governor, Emmanuel Mutebile, this could be a timely opportunity to rid the institution of the characters that have for long damaged the reputation of the organization and embark on efforts to restore confidence among the population.

Culprits of such heinous offenses need not be given quick bail as they may interfere with investigations and tempering with evidence just as the President recently recommended.

We also ought to commend the swiftness with which security agencies executed the mission together with State House Anti Corruption Unit.
