Bobi Wine Criticized for ‘Double Standards’ on Drug Abuse Amid Party Card Issuance

The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, is facing a wave of criticism alleging double standards regarding his public stance against drug abuse, following reports that the party issued membership cards to individuals described by critics as “renowned drug addicts.”

The controversy stems from recent NUP party card distribution events, where figures like Nina Rose and Nubian Lee were reportedly among those receiving membership.

According to Moses Nsereko, former Kawempe North Member of Parliament contestant, the two choices made by Bobi Wine directly contradict his vocal advocacy for protecting young Ugandans from the scourge of drug abuse.

“Bobi Wine must start practicing what he says; he cannot claim to be fighting for the youth to leave drugs. What kind of leader is he?”

“He cannot claim to be a leader who plans to protect Ugandan youth from drug abuse while simultaneously rewarding individuals with known associations with drug use with party cards,” Nsereko asserted.

Abed Bwanika Member of parliament Kimanya-Kabonera echoed the criticism, saying that they are tired of Bobi Wine’s double standards. He emphasized the need for greater consistency between  NUP’s anti-drug messaging and its membership decisions.

Bwanika suggested that the party’s actions undermine its credibility on issues of youth welfare and, as usual, does not offer them a better alternative but encourages them to sink deeper into drug abuse, as its leaders are well-known users.

The allegations have ignited a heated debate on social media and within political circles, with many calling for clarification from the NUP leadership. These specific claims regarding Nina Rose and Nubian Lee’s alleged associations need to be clearly addressed.

The National Unity Platform has yet to issue a statement regarding its party ticket issuance to known drug users. Nsereko has demanded a formal public response to these specific allegations concerning the issuance of party cards and the subsequent criticism of hypocrisy on the drug abuse issue from the NUP leadership.
