The leader of the opposition National Unity Platform party, NUP, Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, has accused the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, of working with the government to undermine their agenda since 2021.

Bobi Wine claims that this collaboration was known to NUP leadership as early as 2021, adding that Mpuuga failed to organize protests in parliament aimed at boosting NUP on the political scene.

According to Bobi Wine, the regime calculated efforts through Mpuuga to destabilize the NUP by co-opting Mpuuga and encouraging him to contest against him for the Party presidency.

“We are now aware that they are trying to use our former Leader of Opposition to register People Power as a political party. This process started two years ago. The government started to use our own to make sure we fight each other,” Bobi Wine said.

Bobi Wine further emphasized that the ongoing splits within the party are not mere coincidences but rather strategic moves orchestrated by the regime to weaken the opposition through their own people.

“All these splits are not innocent; these are works of the regime that planted Mpuuga and his team to weaken us from within; unfortunately, he is not alone with his team; we recently learned of other people who are moles yet they hold key roles in the party, and it started way back,” he added.

Despite these challenges, Bobi Wine claimed that they will remain steadfast in their commitment to the party’s core values and mission.

“For us, we are not defined by just the name but by the values that we profess and the mission to free our country,” he affirmed.

However, Democratic Party Bloc Members ascertain that Bobi Wine is not being sincere in accusing Mpuuga, because Mpuuga has been loyal to NUP.

“We are aware that Bobi Wine is scared of Mpuuga; because of how he handles matters of leadership and his maturity, we have learned that since Bobi Wine distanced himself from Mpuuga, a lot of things have been going downhill for NUP. We wanted to take this opportunity to bring him back to DP, but unfortunately he turned us down,” a DP bloc member noted.

Political experts believe that as tensions rise within Uganda’s political landscape, the implications of these accusations could have significant consequences for the opposition and its efforts to challenge the current government.
