Agather Atuhaire, a local activist in Kampala, has continued to face difficulty in producing the accountability of more than Ugx450 million, which she mobilized to fund the release of demonstrators arrested during the flopped march to parliament protest.
On Wednesday, August 7th, 2024, Atuhaire, following a series of media campaigns by the protestors demanding to know the total sum of money collected by her and what she used it for, hurriedly presented what has been described as cooked-up accountability.
In her submission on x-account, Atuhaire claimed to have only received over Ugx 32 million and US dollars 200, of which she spent over Shs13 million on the protesters’ bail, sureties, and other personal requirements.
Atuhaire further claimed she currently has a balance of Ugx34 million and USD 200, something that raised concern.
“Guys, this is the amount of money we received: UGX 32,478,430 and $200; anyhow, now I have around Shs34 million and USD 200. Tedious work, and most people prefer to remain anonymous; however, if you have any further queries, I will answer them. Also, what do you want us to do with the remaining money?” tweeted Atuhaire.
Amos Wakabi, one of the demonstrators, disputed her accountability, claiming it does not add up since they are aware she received up to Ugx 450 million.
“Imagine even what she has provided does not add up; how do you claim to have received Ugx32,478,430 and spent Ugx13,563,300, and you are left with Ugx34, 000, 000?” Wakabi said.
Wakabi further alleged that Atuhaire had only provided accountability for funds that were received beginning July 23, 2024, rather than before the protests.
“Funds started flowing in as early as June when the protests were first announced. I know this for a fact because a colleague was tasked with handling the printing of flyers, t-shirts, and placards for the March to Parliament. He was advanced with Shs50 million for the work,” said Wakabi.
Wakabi wants Atuhaire to present credible accountability and transparency.
On Wednesday, a group of protesters admitted to having trailed Atuhaire’s sister to help persuade her to release their money.
This was in response to a claim by Atuhaire that a group of unknown people were trailing her sister to harm her.
