he Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, has stressed the importance of hope and redemption to the Christian community.
He made this call on July 28, 2024, during a special service held at St. John’s Chapel Church of Uganda, Luzira, that was specifically organised for the staff of Uganda Prisons Service and their spouses. A separate service was also held at Upper Maximum Security Prison, Luzira, for the inmates.
According to Kaziimba, hope is essential for a meaningful life, even in challenging circumstances, and that the support of the Christian community is vital in helping individuals navigate their journey towards reintegration into society.
“The Christian community within the prisons should represent these principles, fostering an environment where individuals can find forgiveness and a route to a better future” Kaziimba said.
He stressed the significance of hope, perseverance, and God’s sovereignty in the face of betrayal, suffering, uncertainty, and forgiveness.
He encouraged the inmates to embrace faith and to utilise it as a source of strength and transformation in holding onto hope, trusting God’s plan, and forgiving others, just as Joseph did in the Bible (Genesis 37-50).
Representing the Commissioner General of Prisons (CGP), Mr. Milton Tiyo, Assistant CGP (Director Correctional Services), expressed gratitude for the Anglican Church’s continued support of UPS.
He highlighted the importance of religious empowerment and other rehabilitation and reintegration programmes within the service.
The inmates were deeply grateful to receive the Archbishop, with many expressing their appreciation for the spiritual guidance and support. The confirmation and Holy Communion sessions were seen as a blessing, providing a sense of spiritual renewal and purpose.
