Hon. Betty Amongi, Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, flagged off 390 Ugandans to Dubai for various professional career possibilities today, June 29, 2023.
The contingent’s primary roles will revolve around serving at Dubai International Airport as clearing agents, cargo handlers, check-in agents, and more.
“The Ministry of Gender is focusing on licencing companies that prioritise exporting professional labourers rather than casual workers,” Amongi said.
According to the ministry of gender records, an average of 24,086 Ugandans leave Uganda annually in search of employment, especially in the Middle East.
Amongi also advised people who intend to work outside of Uganda to be cognizant of the laws of the countries where they will be stationed.
“Not all countries operate like Uganda; please learn the laws and customs of the countries you are going to work in to avoid problems,” she urged.
Uganda generates an annual average of $600 million (Shs2.2 trillion) through migrant work to the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia accounting for the lion’s share.
