The 67th session of the Council of Ministries of the Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa -DLCO-EA is slated to be held in Kampala, Uganda from 26th to 28th October, 2022.

This is part of many activities currently being undertaken as the organization marks its 60th anniversary.

DLCO-EA is a nine-member country organization which includes Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya, and Somalia.

It supports member countries in the prevention and control of migratory pests (locusts, armyworms, tsetse flies, and quelea birds) and any emerging pests that threaten food security in the member countries.

Kyakulaga Fred Bwino, the State Minister of Agriculture, Animal, Industry and Fisheries, explained that the organization also has an Executive Committee comprised of heads of Crop/Plant Protection Departments or Directorates of the member countries.

He adds that the meeting will also discuss the modernization of organization to respond to current global trends.

“Together with my team from the Ministry of Agriculture, we have welcomed representatives of the Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa (DLCO-EA) to Uganda. The team has arrived in the country ahead of the 67th Session of the Organization’s Council of Ministers,” he said.

DLCO-EA is a United Nations (UN) registered organization and was established by an international convention signed by all member countries in 1962.
