Uganda has today joined countries that have so far confirmed cases of Omicron a new variant of Covid 19.

“The ministry of health Uganda has confirmed 7 cases of the Omicron variant from South Africa. Five of these arrived from Nigeria while 2 arrived from South Africa”. MOH tweeted.

The confirmed cases have been isolated and are being closely monitored. They are all not severely ill.

The results were confirmed by the genomic surveillance that has been carried out at various points of entry and among the general population by the health teams.

“Therefore the population is encouraged to remain calm, get vaccinated against COVID19 and adhere to the Sops”. Ministry of health added.

The minister of health is expected to brief the public on the new confirmed cases with detailed information.

Omicron was first identified by scientists in South Africa in a specimen collected on 9th November 2021

Doctors say most of the patients haven’t been vaccinated, and an alarming number of them are children under the age of five-years-old.
