There has been uproar in some sections of social media over the choice of government procuring 282 double cabin pickups using the money donated by Ugandans last year.

The decision came off recommendation from District Covid19 taskforces that identified ease of movement, monitoring and mobilization as the key elements for an effective approach to the pandemic.

Many people have pondered why the money has not been used to buy vaccines or ambulances.

This question ignored the fact that government had already finalised procurement of Ambulances for all Regions during the same period. They were fully facilitated and deployed with staff and fuel at all Regional Referal hospitals.

On the hand, vaccines have already been ordered to the tune for ten million people. The problem is the inability of the global suppliers to meet the demand not vice versa.

Therefore it is important to appreciate that government has done what it promised to do with the money donated by Ugandans and not diverted it as some unscrupulous Ugandans would have wanted.

The Covid19 fight is far from over. Outreach programs will be very Important if we are to manage to exist with the pandemic for the foreseeable future as more permanent measures are being sought.
