President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has assented to the sugar bill, that now becomes the Sugar Act. This will allow Uganda to export around 20,000 metric tonnes of surplus sugar to our East African neighbor.

This presents new opportunities for growth for the Sugar industry in Uganda. The President thanked his counterpart HE JP Magufuli for his cooperation on the matter that he says will help in promoting the East African community.

President Museveni blamed the politics of identity from blocking such developments in the region but said that it is sensitization that is needed to bridge the gap.

Minister Amelia Kyambadde welcomed the development saying that Ugandan producers had been frustrated in past from failure to break into the regions markets.

Mwanza port on lake Victoria will be the port of entry for the products and this will also boost transportation and Economic activities on the lake.

Uganda produces a surplus of 48,000 metric tonnes of sugar per year from it’s 11 industries something that has enabled prices to remain stable in the times of COVID 19 and the panic buying and hoarding that characterised it’s beginning.
