Waiswa Mufumbiro, the deputy spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP), is under fire following controversial remarks he made about the death of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, calling it a “blessing in disguise.”

Speaking to journalists about the death of Ssegirinya, who was also a member of NUP, that occurred Thursday, January 09, 2025, Mufumbiro condoled with Ssegirinya’s family but noted that his death provides an opportunity for NUP to strengthen itself in Kawempe North.

“We condole with his family in these trying moments; however, as you may all know, comrade Ssegirinya was compromised by our oppressor when he signed a deal together with Allan Ssewanyana to get out of prison,” Mufumbiro said.

Mufumbiro added that he is looking forward to representing the people of Kawempe North in Parliament now that Ssegirinya is gone.

These remarks have sparked outrage among the public, with many describing them as insensitive and opportunistic.

“This is shocking and unacceptable. At a time when we are mourning the loss of a dedicated leader, such comments are deeply hurtful,” said Agnes Nampeera, a Kawempe North resident.

Harriet Nakandi, another Kawempe North resident, said, “This is not the time for politics. Hon. Ssegirinya worked tirelessly for the people of this constituency, and for someone to celebrate his death is both disrespectful and cruel. We demand an apology from Mufumbiro.”

John Bosco Ssenoga, a youth leader from the area, added, “Ssegirinya stood for the people, and his death is a big blow to all of us. Any politician using this moment for personal gain should be ashamed. We need leaders who empathize with the pain of their communities, not those who see tragedy as an opportunity.”

Margaret Namatovu, a political analyst and advocate for ethical leadership, remarked, “Ugandans are tired of divisive and opportunistic politics. Leaders must understand that words have consequences, especially during moments of collective grief.”

In the early stages of his sickness, Ssegirinya decreed that Mufumbiro should never step at his burial, after the NUP deputy spokesperson said that Ssegirinya was “faking illness or he should die if he was really sick.”.

Hon. Ssegirinya, affectionately known as “Mr. Updates,” was celebrated for his grassroots activism and commitment to improving the welfare of his constituents. His untimely death has been met with an outpouring of grief across the nation, with many lauding his efforts to champion healthcare and education in Kawempe North.
