US President-elect Donald Trump has announced the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he appointed Tesla and SpaceX founder tech billionaire Elon Musk to lead the effort to reform the federal bureaucracy.
Musk was appointed together with biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and strong advocate of free-market principles.
According to Trump, the initiative aims to tackle the $6.5 trillion government budget by eliminating waste, reducing regulations, and restructuring federal agencies for greater efficiency.
Trump’s announcement was made in a statement released on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024, on the President-elect X page, emphasizing the urgent need to focus on dismantling bureaucratic red tape, cutting unnecessary expenditures, and implementing large-scale structural reforms.
“I’m pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies—essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement.” Trump stated.
Trump praised Musk and Ramaswamy as key figures in his “Save America” movement.
“Together, they will dismantle government bureaucracy, slash wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies,” Trump added.
The new department will work with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to drive large-scale reforms and ensure accountability in federal spending.
Musk, known for his innovative work in technology, and Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate and biotech entrepreneur, will focus on reducing inefficiencies within federal agencies and creating an entrepreneurial approach to governance.
“We will drive out the massive waste and fraud throughout our annual $6.5 trillion of government spending,” Trump said.
The project, which has a clear deadline of July 4, 2026, coincides with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of America’s Independence.
Trump believes this initiative will provide a smaller, more efficient government, delivering long-term benefits for Americans.
