The President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, has extended his warm congratulations to United States President-elect Donald Trump and asked him to emphasize respect for the African continent.

In his congratulatory message passed via his official handle X, Kagame called upon Trump to uphold his message of partnering as a choice rather than forcing views and ways of life on other countries, especially in Africa.

Kagame further expressed interest in strengthening the relationship between the two countries and in the same line calls.

“The elect Donald Trump, I warmly congratulate you on behalf of the government and people of Rwanda for your historic and decisive election as the 47thPresident of the United States. Your clear message has been that the United States should be a partner of choice that attracts by the force of its example rather than by imposing its views and ways of life on others,” Kagame tweeted.

Kagame also noted his willingness to work with Trump for the common benefit of both counties in the years to come.

Similarly, Kenya’s President William Samoei Ruto applauded Trump’s firm resolve and the American people for showing their boldness.

“Kenya stands ready to further enhance its cooperation on matters of mutual interest, including trade, investment, technology and innovation, peace and security, and sustainable development,” Ruto said.

This follows Trump’s victory in the November 4, 2024, concluded presidential elections that resulted in his winning against Democratic candidate Harris Kamala.

Despite Kagame’s remarks, Trump’s previous term saw some trade tensions, which included the suspension of Rwanda’s duty-free apparel export benefits under AGOA.

This action was in response to Rwanda’s increased tariffs on used clothing imports as well as concerns on human rights and political opposition within the country.
