ATMIS Condemns Deadly Attacks on Peacekeepers in Mogadishu

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has condemned a series of mortar attacks that targeted the Halane Base Camp in Mogadishu on the morning of November 2, 2024.

The attack has resulted in significant loss of life and injuries among both military personnel and civilians.

In a statement, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Head of ATMIS, expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

“The heinous attack will not deter us and the Somali Security Forces from pursuing lasting peace and security in Somalia,” Souef said.

He reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to combat terrorism and build a peaceful and prosperous Somalia.

In response to the attacks, members of the ATMIS Senior Leadership Team visited the impact sites to assess the situation and provide support.

ATMIS remains dedicated to its mission and continues collaborating with Somali security forces to enhance safety and security in the region.

“ATMIS extended its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the attack and wished a swift recovery to those injured,” the statement read in part.

The assault highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Somalia as the nation works towards stability and peace.
