President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the need for a united approach to strengthen security across the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
This was revealed at a meeting at State House Entebbe with his counter, President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday, 30 October 2024.
The two leaders extensively discussed joint strategies for addressing pressing security threats in the Eastern DRC.
President Museveni highlighted the importance of collaborative security measures to address the persistent threats in the Eastern DRC, focusing on coordinated action against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and other destabilizing forces.
“Our collaboration is not just about securing our borders but is driven by a shared vision of safety and stability for our people,” said President Museveni
“This strategic alliance is timely, as tensions have been escalating in the eastern region of the DRC, causing concern for both countries. In their discussions, the leaders reinforced their commitment to joint military operations aimed at dismantling the ADF and restoring security to affected areas,” Museveni said.
Museveni commended the effectiveness of recent joint operations and expressed his determination to continue supporting the DRC’s peace initiatives.
“We cannot overemphasize the importance of these joint efforts. The recent meeting between our senior officers in Kinshasa aimed at assessing the joint operations carried out against the ADF terrorists, reaffirming our commitment to securing this region.” Museveni added, reflecting on the recent military assessment conducted in Kinshasa.
President Tshisekedi echoed Museveni’s sentiments, stressing that peace and security are the cornerstones of prosperity for both nations.
“The very enriching and very promising discussions that we had revolved essentially around the peace process, this peace that we want for our region. I am leaving with the hope that everything we said to each other will come to fruition. I am counting on you, on your wisdom, so that everything we have said to each other comes true,” Tshisekedi commented after the three-hour discussion.
This meeting follows recent talks held early this year in Kinshasa by senior officers of the DRC Armed Forces (FARDC) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), which centered on addressing the threat posed by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a terrorist group that has been destabilizing the region.
