The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) has introduced three new high-yielding groundnut varieties.

The new varieties, including Nut 5R, 4R, and 3R, were launched during the World Food Day 2024 celebrations, hosted at the National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute (NaSARRI) in Serere District on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024.

Frank Tumwebaze, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, said the new varieties were developed through years of research, targeting climate resilience.

He said the varieties target high productivity, particularly in regions where drought and unpredictable weather patterns have hindered agricultural success.

“These new crop varieties have already been given to certified seed companies for multiplication and commercialization. I ask NARO to raise awareness among farmers about these varieties and ensure their uptake,” Tumwebaze said.

Jessica Alupo, the Vice President, while presiding over the event, commended the ongoing research and development efforts, emphasizing the need for climate-resilient agriculture to secure the future of Uganda’s food systems.

“As we explore into the research of climate-resilient varieties of crops, livestock, and aquatic species, I call upon our scientists to ensure the maximum safety of new products, nutritional value, and seed or breeding stock availability to farmers at all times,” Alupo remarked.

She further highlighted the importance of science and innovation in transforming agriculture and called for continued efforts in developing climate-adaptive solutions for Ugandan farmers.

The introduction of the NARO Nut varieties is a major milestone for Uganda’s agricultural sector. With climate change posing increasing risks to food production, these resilient varieties are expected to reduce crop losses, improve food security, and enhance farmers’ income.
