Kenya Airways, a regional airline, has announced the suspension of its passenger flights to Mogadishu, effective October 14, 2024, citing operational challenges.

Allan Kilavuka, the Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways confirmed the development on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

In a letter addressed to Mohamed Daghar, the Principal Secretary, State Department of Transport and Ministry of Road and Transport Nairobi, said the decision was informed by a current series of challenges.

“Due to operational challenges, Kenya Airlines Board and Management have decided to suspend passenger flights to Mogadishu. We request your understanding of this unforeseen development that may reverse the positive trend and gains made so far,” Kilavuka said.

The management of Kenya Airways expressed gratitude towards the Kenyan government and the Embassy in Mogadishu for their continued support in the airline’s efforts to expand its network and enhance connectivity in the region.

However, the airline emphasized that this difficult decision was made after careful consideration of the current business environment, which has posed significant challenges to its operations.

“The airline is committed to providing reliable air travel services and its hope for future collaboration with government officials to navigate these challenges,” Kilavuka added.

Stakeholders are urged to stay informed as Kenya Airways navigates this operational setback.

Kenya Airways has been a key player in the East African aviation sector, and this suspension marks a notable shift in its service offerings.

The airline remains hopeful for resolution to the challenges it faces and looks forward to resuming flights in the future.
