UPDF Strongly Condemns the Devastating Shooting in Amolatar District

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has expressed deep sorrow and condemned the tragic shooting of Thirumalesh Etikala, a 49-year-old site manager at Royal Velko Joint Ventures by private James Tolit that claimed his life.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 4, 2024, in Namasale, Amolatar District.

In a statement released by Capt Edwin Mawanda Public information officer of the 5th Infantry Division, the UPDF extends heartfelt sympathies to the family  and friends of Thirumalesh and Private James Tolit a 38-year-old soldier from the 103 Battalion, who took his own life shortly after the shooting.

The motivations behind Tolit’s actions remain under investigation, but military officials emphasized that there is no justification for such violence.

“We are profoundly saddened by the loss of Thirumalesh Etikala, this senseless act not only took away a valued member of the community but also highlights the urgent need for understanding and addressing the underlying issues that lead to such tragedies.”the UPDF Statement read part.

The UPDF has initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and well-being of all individuals.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” Capt. Mawanda said

The community mourns the loss of Etikala, whose contributions to the Royal Velko Joint Ventures were significant.

As investigations proceed, the UPDF and local authorities are focusing on providing support to those affected by this horrific event.
