The Electoral Commission (EC) has released the roadmap for the by-elections of the District Woman Representative to Parliament for Kisoro and Councillors on various Local Government Councils in the district where vacancies exist.

In the statement released on Thursday, September 26, 2024, the Electoral Commission Chairperson (EC), Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, said that the by-election program will commence with an update of the National Voters’ Register from Friday, September 27th, to Tuesday, October 1st, 2024, at update stations in each of the seventy-one (71) parishes/wards in Kisoro district.

According to Byabakama, the Commission selected Tuesday, October 1, 2024, as the cut-off date for applying for registration as a voter and for transfer of voting location in the district.

“The display of the Voters’ Register will be conducted for a period of ten (10) days, that is, from Monday 14th to Wednesday 23rd October 2024, at all the three hundred and twenty-two (322) polling stations in Kisoro District,” Byabakama stated.

He said that the display of parish tribunal recommendations for deletion from or inclusion on the register will be conducted for six days starting from October 23-28, 2024, at the respective parish/ward headquarters.

He added that the nomination of candidates will be conducted on October 30-31, 2024, at the Office of the District Returning Officer, Kisoro, where the successfully nominated candidates will conduct campaign meetings for twelve days, from November 1-12, 2024.

Byabakama emphasized that polling and tallying of results for the by-election of councillors representing Special Interest Groups will take place on Monday, 11th November 2024, while the polling day for the District Woman Representative to Parliament and other Local Government Councillors will be conducted on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

The District Woman Representative seat became vacant following the death of the former Woman MP, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, which occurred on September 7, 2024.
