The Mayor of Kyiv’s Vitali Klitschko in Ukraine has said that Kyiv was plunged into chaos as a barrage of Russian missiles struck the city, resulting in widespread destruction and panic among residents. Targeting multiple districts and igniting fires that wreaked havoc on infrastructure.

Klitschko made these remarks during a press briefing held on Monday, September 2, 2024, where he noted that the assault began around 5:31 a.m. local time in the early hours of September 2, 2024.

“The strikes primarily affected the Sviatoshyn, Holosiivskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts, where cars and non-residential buildings were set ablaze,” Klitschko said.

He added that emergency services were overwhelmed, responding to numerous incidents across the city. As Kyiv grapples with the aftermath of the attack, the conflict’s ripple effects are being felt across the border in Russia.

“Our emergency responders are doing everything they can, but the scale of the destruction is immense. In Kursk, thousands of evacuees from the conflict zone are seeking refuge in makeshift shelters. With over 133,000 people evacuated, local authorities are struggling to provide basic necessities and support for those displaced by the ongoing violence,” Klitschko noted.

Olena Wave, a Ukrainian lawyer, recounted the harrowing experience as a missile flew perilously close to her home, leaving the community in shock and fear.

The situation remains tense as both cities face the challenges of war, with residents on edge and emergency services stretched thin. As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community watches closely, calling for urgent measures to protect civilians and restore peace in the region.
