The police in Kampala have arrested over 18 youths for allegedly staging an unlawful protest along Nasser Road.

A source says the group had planned to march to parliament to protest against the construction of the East African crude oil pipeline.

ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police, said on Monday, August 26, 2024, that this was the same group of students from different universities who organized themselves as climate activists to demonstrate their dissatisfaction against EACOP activities in the Albertine region.

“They are actively recruiting people to join their cause, but we are also ready for them, and we will arrest them if they continue with the illegal assemblies,” said Owoyesigire.

On February 28, 2023, a court in Paris dismissed a case filed by six French and Ugandan environmental and human rights groups seeking to halt construction of the 1,443-kilometre East African Crude Oil Pipeline (Eacop) from Uganda to Tanzania.
