The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced the resumption of hiking activities to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
In May 2024, UWA temporarily halted hiking activities due to safety concerns.
On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, UWA announced the resumption following a thorough assessment of the conditions surrounding the Margherita glacier, where a crevasse formation had raised alarms earlier in May 2024.
Timothy Arinda, a tourist guide in Kabala town, said the reopening of Margherita Peak for hiking activities marks an exciting opportunity for adventurers and nature enthusiasts.
He says the reopening signifies a commitment to ensuring that visitors can safely enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity of the Rwenzori Mountains.
“During this period, UWA explored various safety enhancements, including the potential installation of a permanent ladder to provide a safer route over the glacier. We are confident that these enhancements will provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for all visitors seeking to summit one of Africa’s most iconic peaks,” reads part of the release.
UWA has also advised that the best time to hike in Rwenzori Mountains National Park is generally from June to August and December to February when the weather is relatively dry and stable.
“UWA will maintain close monitoring of hiking routes to ensure ongoing safety and will provide updates accordingly,” reads part of the document.
The park is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, unique flora and fauna, and spectacular views, making it a prime destination for both local and international trekkers.
