President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged to extend support to the family of the late Lt. Gen. Bazilio Olara-Okello, a former UNLA commander.

Museveni met the family from State House, Entebbe, on Wednesday, August 7th 2024 where he recalled his encounters with the late military commander.

The family was led by Dan Kidega, the former Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, Beatrice Olara Ataro, the widow, and Florence Apoko Olara, the daughter of the late Olara-Okello.

President Museveni reflected on his experiences in Tanzania in 1972 and the military operations that shaped Uganda’s destiny.

Beatrice Olara Ataro, the widow of the late Olara-Okello, expressed her gratitude for President Museveni’s continued support.

She also invited him to visit their home next year, as they plan to honor her late husband’s legacy.

She said that the president’s support reflects his dedication to honoring the country’s history and those who have contributed to its freedom.

President Museveni, in his response, promised further assistance to Olara-Okello’s family, ensuring their well-being and honoring the legacy of a man who played a vital role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.

She acknowledged the honor and assistance provided by the UPDF, which helped to cover significant costs and ensured a dignified farewell.

“We thank you for the help you offered to our mother and the Acholi people when our father’s body was returned. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces received us with honor at the airport and provided a respectable burial,” Apoko noted.

Bazilio Olara-Okello (1929–January 9, 1990) was a Ugandan military officer and one of the commanders of the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA), which, together with the Tanzanian army, overthrew Idi Amin in 1979.
