The Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA, has launched the Green Industry Agenda under the theme “Putting the Environment First” to promote sustainable growth in the country’s industrial sector.

The 10-year program, launched on July 25, 2024, will critically focus on initiatives aimed at environmental sustainability to conserve the natural ecosystem and promote the use of renewable energies.

While speaking during its launch at the Kampala Serena Hotel, Deo Kayemba, the UMA Executive Board Chairman, said this marks a significant step towards environmental protection.

“We’re launching an initiative benefiting our entire nation. The manufacturing sector recognizes shared responsibility to prioritize green practices and make them the core of our business strategy,” said Kayemba.

Speaking on behalf of the United Nations, Munir Safieldin, the UNICEF Representative to Uganda, said the manufacturing sector can be a game changer for Uganda, emphasizing the adoption of cleaner and more efficient technologies to reduce the carbon footprint.

“The launch of the Green Energy Agenda signals a strong commitment from the manufacturing sector, and we encourage all sectors to follow suit. Future generations will thank us for making Uganda a better place for them,” Dr. Munir stated.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, assured members of the government’s commitment to an orderly and phased energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy that minimizes negative consequences on workers, ecosystems, and national economies for sustainable development.

UMA has launched this program in partnership with DTB Uganda, Roofing Group Ltd., and Steel and Tube Industries Ltd. to support this initiative.
