Led by Theodore Ssekikubo, Members of Parliament championing the censure of the four Commissioners have announced a nationwide tour as a new strategy of collecting signatures from MPs who are in their constituencies and can’t make it to Parliament during this recess period.
According to Theodore Ssekikubo the Lwemiyaga County MP, while addressing journalists at Parliament on Monday 24th June 2024, these efforts are underway to ensure that the already collected 167 signatures collected so far, don’t go to the waste.
“Parliament will not be saddled with reporting that MPs have requested for allowances. We start on July 1, 2024, with the Eastern region of Jinja,” Ssekikubo said.
Ssekikubo said that he has learnt of a plot that the commissioners in question have run to court to seek assistance so that they can come up with some fictitious case and subjudice rule. Saying that the matter has been placed under justice Ssekana, he called on separation of power by noting that the matter is already under the ambit of parliament.
Ssekikubo added that as the team awaits the resumption of plenary on July 23rd 2024, the recess period will be used to prepare their motion, fine tune the evidence, and rule out any chance of dropping the motion. He also warned Judiciary against getting dragged in this fight, citing reports of the Commissioners moving to file a case in court to block debate on the Shs1.7Bn service award.
Richard Muhumuza the Bwamba County Member of parliament (MP) defended the decision to take the collection of signatures across the country saying parliament is the House of Representatives to the people of Uganda. The commissioners in question received the service award in
May 6 2022 who included the former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central), Esther Afoyochan (Zombo Woman MP), and Prossy Mbabazi (Rubanda
Woman MP) in a meeting that was allegedly chaired by the Speaker Rt. Hon. Anita Among.
