The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety has called upon all parents, teachers, and caretakers of children to follow road safety tips and to be responsible for their safety as they travel to and from schools.
SP Micheal Kananura, the Spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, stated on May 26, 2024, that as schools re-open for term 2, it’s essential to prioritize road safety to ensure the wellbeing of students, teachers, parents, and other road users.
“Road safety should be prioritized as schools reopen for the second term, to ensure the well-being of students, teachers, parents, and other road users,” stated Kananura.
In an effort to reduce traffic congestion and create safer roads, Kananura urged all motorists to observe road rules while exercising maximum discipline and patience. He emphasized the need to refrain from distractions such as phone usage while driving, walking, or crossing roads.
Kananura also stressed that children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by parents or guardians to guarantee their safety on the road. Furthermore, he issued a stern warning to drivers, highlighting that exceeding occupancy limits and engaging in activities that interfere with safe driving contravene traffic laws and regulations, with the potential to cause accidents.
Additionally, Kananura provided safety instructions for riders and children on motorcycles. He urged them to wear helmets at all times and only use recognized stages for hiring taxis and boda-bodas. To avoid falling victim to scams or kidnappings, they should make a note of the registration number of the vehicle they board and avoid tinted or unfamiliar vehicles.
Kananura emphasized the importance of road safety for all motorists and the public. He reiterated the need for discipline and patience on the roads to minimize congestion and ensure the safety of everyone.
