Authorities in Kenya have reported that Over 40 people have been killed in Kamuchiri a Village in Western Kenya after a dam burst due to floods following heavy rainfall.

According to Susan Kahika the governor of Nakuru county, homes were swept away and roads were cut off after the dam burst.

“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud, Kahika said to a local news agency.

Kahika said that rescue teams are digging through the mud in search of survivors in the village near the small town of Mai Mahui about 60km from the capital Nairobi.

“We are trying to get a handle on the situation but it’s a bit overwhelming we’re doing the best we can especially to reach those who have been carried away because we hope that some are still alive,” Kihika said.

Kahika however warned that the number of those who died could rise significantly as dozens are still missing.

The incident comes at a time when more than 103 people have been reported dead and thousands have been displaced from their homes since March local media has reported.
