The Uganda Prisons Service, in partnership with Penal Reform International (PRI), has launched a manual for the rehabilitation and reintegration of women prisoners in Uganda with the aim of empowering and supporting female inmates for a brighter future.
During the launch of the Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration of Women Prisoners manual on April 12, 2024, in Luzira, Samuel Akena, the Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons (DCGP), emphasized the importance of supporting women prisoners’ reintegration into society.
“Due to the unique challenges faced by women prisoners, the manual as a tool to guide effective rehabilitation programs has been tailored to their needs, Akena stated.
Akena further highlighted education, vocational training, and mental health support for women prisoners for a successful reintegration.
He emphasized stakeholder collaboration and creating opportunities for women to contribute positively to society upon the release of the manual.
Akena also acknowledged that women prisoners are more vulnerable than men, as they often lose everything, and therefore they have to be treated with care.
Juliet Nantale, Commissioner of Prisons (Rehabilitation and Reintegration), emphasized the importance of the manual. It highlights the relevance of rehabilitation, social reintegration, pathways to prisons, and post-release support for female inmates.
Doreen Kyazze, the Regional Director of Penal Reform International (PRI), commended the collaborative efforts and urged collective support from all stakeholders. The manual will serve as a valuable resource for collective endeavors to empower and uplift women offenders in Uganda.
