Police have issued a warning to women and teenage girls, advising them against traveling alone during late hours of the night and in the early hours of the morning. The caution comes after a disturbing incident in the Aswa East region, where a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped by a group of eight boys.
According to SCP Fred Enanga, the spokesperson for the Uganda Police Force, the victim was returning home from a wedding party in Olampool Village Pader District at around 5:00 a.m. on March 10, 2024, when she was attacked. The assailants, who had been lurking in the darkness, ambushed her along the way. They subjected her to a horrifying episode of sexual violence and heartlessly left her helpless on the side of the road.
Fortunately, passersby intervened and managed to apprehend three of the suspects: Tim Peter, Opio Ivan, and Opio Philip. These individuals confessed to their involvement in the crime. However, five other members of the gang managed to escape capture. Enanga assured the public that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the remaining culprits.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld for her protection, is currently receiving medical treatment and is in a state of shock after enduring such a traumatic ordeal. Though her recovery may be challenging, authorities are hopeful that with time and support, she will be able to heal from this horrific experience.
SCP Fred Enanga used this opportunity to emphasize the vulnerability of women, urging them to exercise caution when venturing out alone, especially during late hours or in poorly lit areas. Enanga stressed the importance of personal safety and encouraged women of all ages to avoid situations that could put their lives at risk.
Incidents of sexual violence against women and girls have long been a cause for concern in Uganda. The police force is continuously working to address such crimes and ensure the safety and security of all citizens. However, it is vital for the community as a whole to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents from occurring.
