Ruth Nankabirwa, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, reiterated Uganda’s unwavering commitment to sustainable oil and gas development. According to Nankabirwa, this commitment is not only aimed at bolstering the country’s economic growth but also at eradicating poverty and ensuring national prosperity.

During an update at the Ministry headquarters on January 23, 2024, Nankabirwa emphasized the need to prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility in Uganda’s oil and gas sector.

She highlighted that the country’s oil and gas projects align with global efforts to promote cleaner energy campaigns. Leveraging technological innovations, these endeavors have successfully minimized the carbon footprint, making them low-emission projects. Nonetheless, Nankabirwa stressed that sustaining this commitment to environmental responsibility is of paramount importance.

“Uganda’s oil and gas projects align with global cleaner energy campaigns. Technological innovations minimize the carbon footprint, making these projects ‘low emission.’ We however need to prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility.” Nankabirwa said

Furthermore, the Minister shared some notable achievements in the sector, including the construction of over 700 kilometers of roads, the establishment of the Kabaale Industrial Park, the development of Kabalega Airport, and expanded electricity supply. These initiatives have not only enhanced connectivity but also improved living standards in the Albertine Region of Uganda.

In a significant milestone towards achieving energy independence, the Ministry handed over the license to construct the Kingfisher Natural Gas Conversion Facility to CNOOC Uganda Ltd. This landmark event signifies a major step forward in Uganda’s journey to harnessing its energy resources for the benefit of its citizens.

Uganda’s commitment to sustainable oil and gas development not only reflects its determination to leverage its natural resources for economic growth but also demonstrates its commitment to mitigating the environmental impact. By prioritizing sustainability and environmental responsibility, Uganda aims to strike a balance between economic development and the preservation of its natural heritage. With ongoing efforts in the sector, Uganda remains on track to harnessing its energy potential while minimizing its ecological footprint.
