Ugandan Pastor Aloysius Bugingo narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by unknown assailants on the night of Tuesday, January 2, 2023, as he approached the Total fuel station in Namungoona, a suburb of Kampala.

Bugingo was promptly rushed to Mulago Hospital where doctors stabilized his condition. According to preliminary reports from the Uganda Police, he is currently receiving treatment and responding well. Authorities have launched an investigation and are actively searching for the perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime.

Edith Nuwampereza, one of Bugingo’s followers, expressed relief that he survived the assault and maintained hope that the culprits would be apprehended. “We are grateful to God that he survived this attempted murder, and we pray for the swift capture of these assailants,” Nuwampereza said.

Bugingo serves as the Director of the House of Prayer Ministries International, a well-known religious institution in Uganda. The police, upon reaching the crime scene, discovered signs of tampering.

According to a statement issued by police, statements from eyewitnesses have been recorded, and Bugingo’s security team is actively cooperating with law enforcement. The deceased’s body has been transferred to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a comprehensive postmortem examination. The police are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage in their relentless pursuit of justice. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.

Bugingo’s personal life has faced public scrutiny in recent times. He is married to Susan Makula Nantaba following his separation from his former wife, Teddy Bugingo, a situation that caused discontent among some of his followers. In addition to his religious activities, Bugingo is a staunch supporter of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, earning a wide following among its members.

As investigations progress, the police are expected to release a comprehensive statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the gunmen’s attack on Bugingo. The thorough analysis of CCTV footage will be a crucial component in identifying and apprehending the assailants responsible for this shocking act of violence.
