In a week-long crackdown on traffic offenses, the traffic police have arrested over 500 drivers for violating road safety regulations. The intensified operations come ahead of the festive season, aiming to ensure safer roads for all.
According to ASP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the arrests took place between November 26 to December 2, 2023.
“A total of 523 drivers have so far been arrested for defaulting the traffic safety regulations regarding the use of driving licenses in a space of one week,” Kananura said.
Among the detained drivers, 121 were caught driving without a license, 181 were apprehended with expired licenses, and 221 were driving without the appropriate class of license.
In addition to the arrests, a total of 349 road crashes were registered during this period, resulting in 64 fatalities and 315 injuries. Notably, 31 of the fatalities occurred among motorcycle riders. Further analysis revealed that 12 fatalities were passengers on motorcycles, 19 were riders themselves, and 21 were pedestrians.
ASP Kananura attributed the accidents to several factors, including improper overtaking, overspeeding, and following too closely. To address these issues, he emphasized the need for continued enforcement and raising public awareness.
These operations follow a week prior where 329 road accidents were recorded, resulting in 64 fatalities and serious injuries for over 300 individuals.
As the festive season approaches, the traffic police are striving to create a safer and more responsible road environment. Drivers are urged to comply with traffic regulations and prioritize road safety, ensuring a joyful and accident-free holiday season.
